• What does Smart Shield cover?
Smart Shield covers the pro-rated net tuition at the time of enrollment, up to $35,000, for each enrolled student at the time a payer/spouse passes away during the academic year.
  • How is Smart Shield different from other tuition insurance options?
​Smart Shield is LIFE insurance, not SEAT insurance. Sometimes referred to as a "death benefit", Smart Shield will only cover tuition costs for a student if the primary payer or their spouse passes away during the the current academic year. It will not cover tuition costs in the event that the students are withdrawn, dismissed, etc. 
  • What is the cost to enroll in Smart shield?
Smart Shield costs $16 per student for families to enroll. Families must enroll all students in their family at a given school in Smart Shield in order to be covered. There is no cost to schools to offer Smart Shield to their families. 
  • What are the eligibility guidelines for parents enrolling in Smart Shield?
To be eligible to enroll in Smart Shield, the primary payer or spouse must be under the age of 70 at the time of attempted enrollment, and reside withing the United States (Rhode Island excluded). We've tried to make this as simple as possible - there are not other guidelines regarding pre-existing conditions, requiring a physical, or anything of that nature. The parent or spouse just has to be under the age of 70 and reside in a state other than Rhode Island.
  • What are the guidelines for students that can be covered by Smart Shield?
In order for a student to be covered, they must be in an active grade and have a tuition greater than $0. As mentioned above, families must enroll all students in their family at a given school to activate coverage. Cost for one child is $16.00, for two it is $32.00, etc. 
  • How do families enroll in Smart Shield?
Each year, we will ask families upon enrollment if they wish to enroll​ in Smart Shield for the upcoming school year. Families that are already enrolled will be contacted via email to see if they wish to participate in the program. 
  • How do families pay the cost to enroll in Smart Shield?
Payment is collected during the enrollment process or on the Smart Shield site. ​Payment can only be made by credit card, and we DO NOT charge a convenience fee for the transaction.

An original death certificate will be required to file a claim. If the claim is found to be valid, the benefit will be paid to the school by Assurity Life Insurance.
