Backup fails in the Blackbaud Management Console when attached to SQL 2016

When manually creating a backup in the Blackbaud Management Console, some users may notice the process fails with the following errors if the database is attached to SQL Server 2016:

The job failed.  The Job was invoked by User [domain user]. The last step to run was step 1 (Back up database (database name)).

Executed as user: [local user]. Failed executing API: CreateProcess. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). NOTE: The step was retried the requested number of times (1) without succeeding.  The step failed.

Executed as user: [local user]. Failed executing API: CreateProcess. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029)

A similar error may also be returned if the backup was Scheduled
We are currently evaluating this issue and will update this article when we have more information.

As an alternative, backup the database in SQL Server Management Studio.

Steps to Duplicate

  1. Launch the Blackbaud Management Console
  2. Click Backup under the database you wish to create a backup for to highligh
  3. Under Perform Backup, click Backup
  4. Result: Failed
  5. Click View Backup History to review errors.
